Rockland County is activating VOAD — Rockland County Voluntary Organization Active in Disasters to help out Harvey victims. Organizations like animal shelter Hi-Tor will be taking in animals stranded by the storm.

Officials say that because the rest of the country was there for Rockland County during Superstorm Sandy, the county is paying it forward.

At this point, officials say there is no way to get donated goods to Texas, but Rockland residents can help out Harvey victims with financial donations. They can make a check out to the United Way of Rockland with Hurricane Harvey noted on the check and mail to 35 Main St. in Nyack.

Hi-Tor animal shelter in Pomona will be taking care of the stranded animals after they are flown to New York as early as next week.

The shelter is looking for not only monetary donations, but also supplies to help the cats and dogs. Specifically, they are looking for food for dogs and cats, cleaning supplies and bedding.
