Voters are heading to the polls in Rockland County, to have their say in Tuesday’s primary elections, and it's home to one of the most closely watched races in the area: The assembly seat representing the 97th District.

Democratic Assemblywoman Ellen Jaffee is the five-term incumbent from Airmont seeking another term against challenger Thomas Gulla from the Airmont planning board.

The district includes communities like Orangetown, Spring Valley, Suffern, Airmont, Chestnut Ridge, Hillburn and others.

Gulla claims the five-term incumbent has not done enough to solve the problems plaguing the East Ramapo school district. But Jaffee counters that she has pushed for changes to education funding and increased oversight for the district, and has succeeded in getting additional money for local schools put into each budget.

The winner of Tuesday’s primary will face republican Joe Chabot in the November election.

The polls will remain open until 9 p.m.
