School bus safety in focus as Yonkers students begin new year

If drivers don’t stop for school buses with flashing lights, it's $250 fine and 5 points on driver's license for first offense

It's a big day for Yonkers Public Schools as children in grades K through 12 have their first day of school. A major topic heading into the school year is traffic enforcement.

At Cerrato Park at the corner of Riverdale Avenue and Vark Street is one bus stop with a high volume of traffic. And Thursday morning, the mayor, police commissioner and school superintendent are putting drivers on alert as the new school year begins.

The main topics: school bus violations and bus driver safety enforcement.

Police say drivers must come to a complete stop in both directions for school buses with flashing lights or it's a $250 fine and five points on a driver's license for the first offense.

Just Wednesday, Yonkers Mayor Mike Spano and Public Works Commissioner Thomas Meier reminded drivers to be safe and on the lookout for students and school buses.

Spano says: "Pay attention because you could save a life."

Meier says: "They're not paying attention to that car who wants to get behind the school bus or get around the school bus before the lights go on."

The National Safety Council says most children killed in a bus crash are between four and seven and are hit by a car passing a stopped school bus.

Yonkers Schools Superintendent Dr. Edwin Quezada will be steering the conversation in a different direction.

Quezada sent a letter to district staff before the school year saying that education in the city is primed to soar to new heights. Priorities include improved instruction, parent and community engagement, realistic teaching methods among other things.

Some Yonkers classes start as early as 7:35 a.m. and end as late as 3:15 p.m. So, if you're on the road, pay attention to children getting off buses or walking around.
