School bus drivers from across the state are going head-to-head in the 46th annual New York School Bus Safety Competition.

The New York School Bus Contractors Association at Rockland Lake State Park in Valley Cottage is hosting the event.

More than 100 drivers from school districts and private school bus contractors first take part in a comprehensive written exam.

Then, they test their skills in hands-on activities, including loading and unloading students and operating a school bus through various driving courses.

Organizers say it's a great way to enhance safety and driving techniques.

"The single most important thing we do every day is keep students safe,” said Michael Martucci, president of the New York School Bus Contractors Association. “And this is an opportunity for bus drivers to feature their driving skills and learn more about bus safety.”

The competition winners will be eligible to compete in the National School Transportation Association's International School Bus Safety Competition in Indianapolis in July.
