Confetti was released today in Times Square as a test run leading up to the big New Year’s Eve party where 3,000 pounds of confetti will fall on revelers.

More than a million people are expected to fill Times Square New Year’s Eve and the New York City Police Department is ready, deploying nearly 7,000 police officers, including 500 anti-terror police officers to stand watch over the New Year’s Eve celebration.

Although there are no direct concerns related to terrorism during the celebration, no backpacks, umbrella, or alcohol will be allowed.

Police are advising people to leave their cars at home if possible.

65 sand trucks and over 100 blocker vehicles will be used for street security and there will also be security sweeps at a moment’s notice in subway and trains stations.

Police will patrol both New York Harbor, including the Hudson and east rivers.

We will have highly visible heavy weapons teams from the elite emergency services unit from our strategic response group from our critical response command; they'll be deployed here in Times Square and other venues throughout the city,” Chief of Police Carlos Gomez said.
