Students and school officials at SUNY Purchase are showing full support for Gov. Cuomo’s plan to make college tuition free.

The plan would mean less in tuition going to a state university like SUNY Purchase, but the college’s vice president of enrollment, Dennis Craig, believes it will still be a plan that benefits everyone.

“All details haven't been announced or fully discussed but we do believe college choice shouldn't be so heavily predicated on someone's ability to pay for college," Craig said.

Earlier this month, the governor announced that students whose parents make $125,000 or less could go to a state or city college for free. The plan would begin in the fall, but won’t be in full effect until 2019.

"I think college should be free if your parents make $125,000 or less. In a lot of countries that aren't in the U.S, it's already a possibility and for us to get on the bandwagon seems to make sense," a SUNY Purchase student said.

Tuition at SUNY Purchase for in-state students currently stands at more than $6,000. Under the governor's plan, room, board, and the cost of books wouldn't be covered.

And while the plan still needs to be approved by state lawmakers, some are questioning how the plan will be paid for and if it actually costs an estimated $163 million.

Craig says that some students are already attending the university for free with federal money, although, he didn't say if the plan could prompt a bump in tuition.
