Johnny Skae is a fourteen-year-old baseball player and big fan of the New York Yankees.

But Johnny has something beneath his uniform most players don't have — a major scar from open heart surgery, but more like a badge of courage.

"I wasn't nervous because they were just so nice and everyone was loving here so it didn't seem too bad," Skae says.

Last year, the eighth grader thought he caught the flu from his friends.

Johnny's mother Cathy took her son to Montefiore Medical Center where she's also a doctor.

Cardiologists diagnosed Johnny with an atrial septal defect - a hole in his heart, causing blood to leak into his lungs.

The only option was to operate.

Last August his family and friends surrounded him with support and his doctor said he has fully recovered. He can now do anything he wants.
Johnny’s new ambition: becoming a cardiologist so he can help others.
