Traffic pattern change aims to improve safety at dangerous Route 202 intersection in Suffern

Off-duty police officer was involved in deadly crash at the intersection in 2016

A year after a deadly crash took place at a busy intersection in Rockland County, a major traffic safety change is being put into effect.

A sign blinking ‘no left turn’ is in front of where an off-duty cop hit two teens, a year ago Thursday, killing one of them. Fast forward and state transportation officials have decided that the restriction is necessary for westbound Route 202 traffic.

Ramapo police say two cars were traveling east on Route 202 when Jonathan Mosquera, the off-duty Peekskill police officer, tried to go around the other car. The two sideswiped. The officer then struck two people walking nearby.

The crash killed 17-year-old Marcos Tawil of Argentina and seriously injured 19-year-old David Maldanado.

Following the incident, a woman told FiOS1 News that something needed to be done to warn drivers about the dangers of the road.

Binah Mishli, a friend of the victim who was killed, says: "It's very dark here at night near 202. If you know this road like I know this road, it's not well lit."

One year later, and signs of the impending changes line the street of Route 202.

‘No left turn’ signs will be installed here by next week, according to the Town of Ramapo Police Department.

The message board will then be changed to inform drivers of the new restriction and will remain in place for another week.

Those who previously used the left turn at the intersection of 202, Lime Kiln and Spook Rock roads, are advised to either turn beforehand at Wilder Road or afterward at Old Haverstraw Road or Grandview Avenue.

Drivers who know Route 202 say it's infamously known for speeding and people walking too close to traffic.
