Travelers brace for effects of Irma as category 5 hurricane nears Florida

At Westchester County Airport, flyers with ties to Florida describe obstacles faced by residents

News of Hurricane Irma strengthening to a category 5 hurricane is sending ripples of fear throughout our region.

"I have a lot of family there. It's nuts. Everyone is afraid. Supermarkets are out of food and out of water. People are panicking and I’m just praying my house is still there," Florida native Mary Capwell said.

Capwell has a home in Fort Myers but she is in Westchester this weekend for her daughter’s wedding. She says some of her family decided not to travel home for the wedding after sky-high airline tickets and fear to leave their homes has forced them to stay.

Though social media is lighting up with some travelers complaining of price gouging by the hundreds, FIOS1 News hasn't seen evidence of that. Airlines like Jet Blue are putting a price cap of $99 on flights out of Florida and are waiving their change fees if adjustments need to be made.
