Yonkers eyes revitalization and development on waterfront

The Yonkers Downtown Business Improvement District unveiled new branding and a website to continue shaping the downtown area

New apartments are being constructed in Yonkers with the waterfront cleared of barges parked along the Hudson River and restaurants and businesses are flourishing the in the area.

The Yonkers Downtown Business Improvement District is a nonprofit that promotes revitalization in the area. On Tuesday they unveiled new branding, along with a new website as they help shape the downtown area.

"More development is yet to come,” said Mayor Mike Spano. “4,000 units, behind us, beside us, ahead of us, just to the north of us."

The group is also unveiling a new litter vacuum and maintenance truck to help keep the area clean.

"When people do come to the downtown it’s about the experience that they have,” said Jaime Martinez, executive director of the Downtown B.I.D. “These vehicles help make sure that experience is a good one."

A larger staff of rangers will help to maintain the area and the district is hosting more events for the city like jazz night.

Yonkers Brewing Company co-owner John Rubbo says he has seen the downtown area really evolve and benefit his own business.

"Over the past two years, we have seen more and more traffic in downtown; more and more people willing to drive over from Yonkers and the county to try the brewery and patronize different restaurants and bars in the area."

According to the Mayor's office, 4000 more people will be coming moving to Yonkers in the next two years.
