A funeral mass was held this morning for fallen Yonkers Det. Frank Fernandez, the 45-year-old police officer who was killed early Sunday morning when his SUV crashed into a fire truck on Palmer Road.

Men and women in blue gathered at Sacred Heart Church to pay their final respects to the 15-year department veteran, who also volunteered with many local charities.

Fellow officers describe Fernandez as a generous man who prioritized his family.

Authorities say Det. Fernandez was off duty when his suburban struck a city fire truck just before 3 a.m. Sunday. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The fire trucks lights and sirens were on, according to officials. The Yonkers Police Department and Westchester District Attorney’s Office is investigating the cause of the crash.
