Suspect accused of shooting Yonkers police officer arraigned

Frank Valencia has been charged with attempted murder and criminal possession of a weapon

Share

18-year-old Frank Valencia was arraigned and charged with first-degree attempted murder and criminal possession of a weapon in the second degree on Thursday for allegedly shooting Yonkers police officer Kayla Maher in the face.

Authorities have visited Valencia's home in New Rochelle to collect evidence in the investigation into the shooting, as ATF agents are trying to figure out how Valencia got his hands on the pistol he used in the shooting, despite having a criminal past.

Valencia's criminal history includes allegedly threatening his father with a gun in July, and being found with a semi-automatic hand gun and 300 rounds of ammunition in May.

Valencia, who was shot and wounded by police during a gunfight, is currently in serious but stable condition. No bail has been set for his release. He will be remanded to police custody once he is well enough to leave the hospital.
