Fire officials are trying to figure out how an apartment went up in flames in Yonkers, leaving at least five families without a home.

Those families were brought to Enrico Fermi, a school down the street from the fire, to spend the night and get assistance from the Red Cross who are set up inside.

Meanwhile, six firefighters were taken to the hospital for minor injuries they suffered while battling that fire.

More than 60 firefighters battled the flames that started on the first floor of a building on Linden Street around 12:30 a.m. Friday.

One resident living inside the building was also treated for minor injuries.

Battalion Fire Chief David Dronzek tells FiOS1 News that they made an aggressive attack to put out the flames that were spreading to the second floor.

The Red Cross says that they are working with 14 adults, over 20 children and several infants.

They also say that the Yonkers school district immediately opened the doors to Enrico Fermi, providing the displacing residents with a place to stay as Red Cross set up cots.

"It was all hands on deck. When the call came in and the amount of people, we have all of our teams, mass care, logistics, staffing, caseworkers, everyone is working on and behind the scenes to ensure the families are comfortable,” says Carolyn Sherwin of the Red Cross.

The fire chief says that they are still investigating but they believe that the fire may have been started by a burning cigarette.
