Parents, teachers and students are taking a stand in Yonkers demanding the state issue more money to their school district. It's something Mayor Mike Spano has been pushing for years.

Mayor Spano has made it an annual tradition to rally in front of lawmakers in Albany to make sure they remember that although Yonkers is in a wealthy county, the city itself is struggling.

The district says there are 26,800 students enrolled but their buildings are 4,500 students over capacity.

On Tuesday, students and other representatives from the city made their way to Albany to make their concerns clear at the capital.

Last year, the state gave Yonkers oversight of a $2 billion reconstruction project. But, that money comes with only a 70 percent reimbursement rate and Spano says they need more than that to cover the construction costs.

Although the city has planned for the project, the first phase being to build three new schools and renovate a few older ones, Mayor Spano says the city can't afford it without a major increase in property taxes.

So his cry in Albany was for a higher reimbursement rate or a building grant from the city so he can go through with the reconstruction plan.
