A robbery turns into a standoff with a SWAT team surrounding a house in Newark.

Police were called about a disturbance at a store by the owner around 9:30 a.m. Thursday.

According to officials, police arrived quickly. When they got on scene, they saw a man with a weapon that was handed off to a second man who ran into 193 Shephard Ave., a house near the store.

A police standoff then lasted over two hours. And the suspect did eventually come out. Newark police confirmed that they currently have two suspects in custody.

"Currently, we have two suspects in custody and a large amount of cocaine seized,” says Anthony Ambrose, public safety director, Newark.

“The SWAT Team is on the scene and applying for a search warrant to look for the firearm," Ambrose added.

Newark Mayor Ras Baraka says, "We commend the officers for their swift response, bringing two suspects in custody. So they've done a good job here with the community and officers working together."

A majority of officials have now left the scene. However, the investigation is still ongoing.
