7-alarm fire tears through Passaic building, leaves it in ruins

Fire crews still putting out hotspots at the scene on Main Avenue

Firefighters are still on the scene of a massive seven-alarm fire that broke out Sunday night in Passaic.

Authorities have been here throughout Monday morning monitoring the building, making sure no hotspots flare up after the huge fire on Main Avenue.

Many in the area are shocked by what’s left behind.

This building on Main Avenue is left in ruins after the flames tore through it overnight. The store is almost unrecognizable to people in the area.

Authorities got the call a little before 10 p.m. Sunday. The flames were heavy by the time they arrived.

Fire crews worked quickly and were able to contain the fire to the one building but not before it grew to seven alarms.

The fire chief says that when crews reached the middle of the building, the heat was so intense that they were forced out.

Several surrounding buildings suffered smoke and water damage.

Several families were forced from soaked homes and are being helped by the Red Cross. A total of eight businesses were affected by the fire.

Authorities are expected to be here throughout the week. The fire chief says it'll take a few days to determine the cause of the fire.
