Over Labor Day weekend, those headed to the beach front in Belmar may see at least one of 20 donation boxes at beachfront entrances.

“So there are 20 donation boxes set up along the beach front and there are going to be more donation boxes in front of bars and restaurants throughout the town from Friday through Monday,” said Belmar Mayor Matthew Doherty.

The donation boxes are an effort to raise money for those in Rockport, Texas who were devastated by Hurricane Harvey.

The idea that was spearheaded by Mayor Doherty, who says he knows first-hand what it’s like to rebuild after a storm, after Superstorm Sandy wreaked havoc on the coastal town almost five years ago.

In an effort to generate as much money as possible, on Monday, Belmar will provide free beach access and free parking in lieu of cash donations, where 100% of the proceeds will go to Rockport, Texas.

The mayor also says he plans to fly to Rockport next week and present the mayor with the check.
