The Borough Council gave it the go ahead but some people who live in East Rutherford aren't happy that a 24-hour 7-Eleven is being built in their neighborhood.

Construction is underway to build the 7-Eleven at the intersection of Union Avenue and Hackensack Street along with a traffic light instead of the stop signs that now regulate the traffic. Some people think, however, that the project will create more headaches in the area.

Sue Auriemma says, "I think we have enough 7-Elevens around here and we have a lot of people and a lot of traffic."

Variances to build an investors bank, a retail space and a 7-Eleven at the intersection were approved by the zoning board in June 2016, according to our partners at The Record. Last month, the council voted to allow the 7-Eleven to operate 24 hours a day.

One councilman who voted for the 24-hour convenience store says that other business located near Route 17 are open as late as 2 a.m. and he didn't see it as detrimental to the area.

Some other locals don't have a problem with it, either. Kelly Dermody says, "Sometimes when you're driving home late at night and you need a snack and nothing's open. Not a bad idea."

However, opponents say they were never told about the April meeting where the vote was taken and many feel that the council needs to be more transparent. "We need to encourage business whenever we can but we need to work as a team and that never seems to happen," says Pat Cioffi.

East Rutherford’s Mayor James L. Cassella says he also feels the 24-hour store will not benefit the area.
