PD: Nearly a dozen people reported injured, sickened by synthetic marijuana

Police in Newark received 10 calls in less than 5 hours, officials say

Newark police officials are on high alert after receiving around 10 calls in less than five hours. According to law enforcement, the calls that came in Monday reported sick or injured people, and the first one to come in was just before 8:15 Monday morning from Military Park on park place just steps from Newark Penn Station.

K-2 is a type of synthetic marijuana that when ingested causes rapid heart rate, vomiting, hallucinations and a lack of blood flow to the heart which can result in death.

Back in April, the drug made an appearance in the city - causing a spike in calls like the type police received today. However, numbers have dropped after suspected dealers were arrested.

People here say they're surprised that a suspected overdose happened in Military Park but they're aware of the problem that Newark faces with drugs as a community.

"We're still in Newark but overall this is a good park,” says Newark resident Eddie Perez. “If you look around there's a lot of friendly activities and families, everyone's just here to hang out.”

Detectives from the police division's narcotics and criminal intelligence units along with the drug monitoring initiative are investigating the suspected overdoses.
