Activists fight for immigrants to receive driver's licenses in NJ

Several states already allow residents to receive a license regardless of immigration status

NEWARK — Activists across New Jersey are working to allow undocumented immigrants to gain access to driver's licenses.

"It's very important that people get into it so they can help the Latinos out or whatever culture it is so they can get a residence and live, you know, in a comfortable life," said Jose Sanchez.

Several states already allow residents to receive a driver's license regardless of their immigration status. Activists say that it would bring extra money into the state and make driving safer.

"We actually know that there would be millions of dollars in revenue because people would be paying for license fees," said Johanna Calle. "Those of us who are insured won't have to worry about getting into an accident with someone who might not be insured."
