Investigators look into house fire in Belleville that displaced 4

No civilians or firefighters were injured during the fire

BELLEVILLE — Fire crews from at least two different companies responded to a house fire on Wednesday afternoon on Cortlandt Street.

Belleville Fire Chief Richard Cavanagh said that a neighbor called police to report the 2-alarm fire that started at the two-family home just after noon.

"En route, we were advised that there were residents trapped on the second floor," Cavanagh said.

Cavanagh said that because the fire started at the home's entrance, firefighters arrived to find the residents trying to escape from second-floor windows.

The fire was under control within 15 minutes of crews arriving and was contained to the front section of the house. No civilians or firefighters were injured during the fire, and while the house suffered smoke and water damage, it is structurally sound.
