NORTH BERGEN — The Route 495 Bridge is 80 years old, and according to Governor Phil Murphy, is overdue for some much-needed reconstruction work.

So, beginning Friday, work will begin on the bridge, with one land in each direction closed while construction goes on. The work, which is expected to take the next two and a half years, is already frustrating many commuters.

"We cannot allow for another day of structure deterioration and another day of engineers hoping this span does not have a major problem" said Murphy.

Lane closures on the roadway, which connects commuters from the Lincoln Tunnel to the New Jersey Turnpike and Route 3, will begin at 9 p.m. Friday evening. Officials are urging commuters who use Route 495 to sign up for alerts and updates on construction.
