Historic first: Horse that crossed finishing line at 92nd Hambletonian is disqualified

‘What The Hill’ barred from $1M prize for making competing horse go off stride in stretch

It was shocking twist on Saturday in East Rutherford after the winner of the 92nd Hambletonian Race was disqualified for the first time in the event’s history.

Even though the horse named “What The Hill” technically crossed the finish line first, the judges disqualified “What The Hill” for making another horse, “Guardian Angel As,” go off stride in the stretch. The $1 million prize was rewarded instead to “Perfect Spirit.”

Even with the upset, people were thrilled to be out at the Meadowlands while others were just happy that the weather held up.
