HOBOKEN — Since the summer of 2017, Lutheran Pastor Rose Beeson has been transitioning from female to male, and for the first time, St. Matthew Trinity Lutheran Church will hold a renaming ceremony for her.

The announcement is a historic moment for Beeson and the church. Beeson, an Arizona native, shared her struggles with sexual orientation and gender identity with her congregation. And with the help of a seminary classmate, she decided to publicly announce her transition, choosing the name "Peter."

"People have been very supportive of me here at this congregation. Like I said, I've been out identifying as queer for a long time. So, I'd say largely people are not terribly surprised," Beeson said.

Beeson says that she does not fear retaliation for her decision to announce her transition, but instead hopes that other churches will begin to evolve and accept those who may be different.
