Hospital's demolition raises health concerns in Elizabeth

Potential asbestos exposure from the abandoned Elizabeth General Medical Center has some residents feeling uneasy

The former Elizabeth General Medical Center is being torn down after being abandoned for nearly 20 years. Residents say the building was frequently vandalized and had become a huge eyesore.

However, some residents say they are concerned about the potential health impacts of the demolition, especially from asbestos. An abatement was performed on the construction site last year, before demolition was cleared to start, but some residents say they are still wary due to a cloud of white dust looming over the area.

"I can't open my windows," said Julitza Plata, who lives nearby. "Now that it's starting to get colder it's OK, but when it was the summer and it was hot and we would have to have our windows closed because we don't want dust in the house and we have kids. We're concerned."
