Jersey City welcomes 28 new police officers

The increase in the city's police force is part of the Mayor's goal to increase public safety

JERSEY CITY - 28 new police officers joined the Jersey City Police Department on Wednesday.

The class is representative of the city's push to make its police force more diverse, with 65 of the new recruits being minorities and nearly half Hispanic. The class also includes 4 veterans and 3 women.

"We're putting in a class in July, another class in September," said Chief Michael Kelly. "The mayor wants us to get well over 950, and so we're going to keep putting them on and as long as crime stays down, we're really happy about that too."
