KEANSBURG — The 100 block of Raritan Avenue was the scene of an early morning fire on Tuesday that sent eight people to the hospital for smoke inhalation. Police confirmed that six of the eight were children.

Police say when they arrived on scene the family was downstairs.

Police say while seven were transported to local Bayshore Hospital, the family was told the father would have to be airlifted due to smoke inhalation burns on the inside of his mouth. The father is still listed in critical condition at this time.

Right now, police say the other seven are set to be released. The Red Cross will be taking care of the family and setting them up somewhere, especially since the children still need to be able to attend school. The house was destroyed in the fire, according to officials.

Authorities say this is a tight-knit community and they expect neighbors will ban together to help the family.

While the cause of the fire is still under investigation, police at this time don't believe it to be suspicious.
