Branchburg Schools: Flu outbreak leads to closures

District transportation loses drivers due to flu

Share

BRANCHBURG — Branchburg Central Middle School and every other school in the Branchburg School District are closed Monday following a flu outbreak among essential personnel.

School Superintendent Rebecca Gensel says she received a call on Sunday from the district's transportation supervisor, who informed her of a bus driver out with the flu. For preventative measures, the district decided they weren't able to run all of its bus routes.

“We would not be doing this if it were not necessary,” said Gensel.

The district serves students from pre-K to eighth grade, and more than 2,000 students were out of school and home for the day.

While students have an off-day, the district worked to ensure its facilities are spotless and germ-free for its students and staff in time for a return to class.

According to Superintendent Gensel, the district is expecting schools to reopen on Feb. 6. She says district officials are currently working on a contingency plan, which could mean borrowed buses from neighboring school districts to make sure they can get their students on buses and into schools.
