DOH investigates death of NJ child suffering from the flu

Officials confirm 2 children in NJ died from influenza this year

ELIZABETH — A child in New Jersey died after coming down with the flu. Elizabeth Schools Superintendent Olga Hugelmeyer says the student was diagnosed with influenza, but right now it's "unclear whether or not the virus was the primary contributing factor to the child's passing."

The name or age of the child has not been released, and the situation is under investigation by the New Jersey Department of Health.

If confirmed, this will be the third child to die in New Jersey this year from the flu. The CDC is reporting this to be the worst influenza season in 15 years.

According to Superintendent Hugelmeyer, on Tuesday grief counselors will be available for students who need help with the grieving process.
