Groundhog Day: Milltown Mel predicts early spring

Milltown Mel is one of 2 future-predicting groundhogs in NJ

MILLTOWN — Milltown Mel woke up early on Feb. 2, with a prediction of an early spring in New Jersey.

More than a hundred people gathered in Milltown to celebrate Groundhog Day. Many told FiOS1 News they love the annual event.

"Celebrating everybody… it's a good tradition," says Milltown resident Christopher Young.

The Milltown wranglers are the volunteers who keep the event alive and well. Wrangler Jim Reid says he was one of the first people to get involved in the event a decade ago.

"When I first started I used to wear dress shoes now [there are] boots under there," says Reid.

Milltown Mel isn't the only future predicting groundhog in New Jersey.
A little later today "Essex Ed" will make his prediction at Turtle Back Zoo in West Orange.
