Popcorn For The People: Providing jobs for adults with autism, development disabilities

100 percent of proceeds will go to program that trains, pays its workers

Popcorn For The People is a nonprofit facility that is making a difference for those with developmental disabilities, one kernel at a time.

The facility provides adults with autism and developmental disabilities with employment in a safe setting.

“This work environment is a mixture of workers on the autism spectrum and they are not typical workers,” says Popcorn For The People Director Dr. Steven Bier. “We have everything from very simple to very complex jobs and then we fit the workers in what works well for their abilities.”

The program is personal for Dr. Bier. It was inspired by his autistic son Samuel who had trouble finding a job.

“It could be difficult, but I'm not ready for that, I need to gain more confidence, experience, job skills, stuff like that,” says Samuel Bier.

Employees are paid for jobs that range in skill level from making popcorn to cleaning. And all the money made from popcorn sales go directly back into the program.
