HOBOKEN — A pastor at St. Matthew’s Church recently told the congregation they are transgender. On Sunday at 11 a.m., Pastor Beeson is being honored with a ceremony to respect that identity.

"I think this is an incredibly important moment," said Beeson. "Because I and the congregation can witness and tell young people who are struggling or people who are struggling at any age that no matter who they are, they are beloved children of God."

Pastor Rose Beeson is changing from having the name "Rose" to the name "Peter."

Beeson also told FiOS1 News about there being a supportive culture of inclusivity at St. Matthew Trinity Lutheran Church in Hoboken. But churchgoer Courtney Kochuba admits that's not always the case in the online world.

"I run our social media, so I am seeing every day there are internet trolls out there," said Kochuba.

Although some churchgoers are not as accepting, the congregation respects those with differences of opinions.

"We've talked about it internally and they are welcome here as well. We just need them to put their fear outside," said Kochuba.
