PD: 2 dead of apparent carbon monoxide poisoning at apartments in Newark

Residents say fire department evacuated units near New Fairview Avenue

NEWARK — Police they found two people dead in a running car Monday night inside of a closed garage at the apartments near New Fairview Avenue and 18th Street. It's believed the man and woman died from apparent accidental carbon monoxide poisoning.

Neighbors say several other residents in the apartment building had carbon monoxide-like symptoms. Some were transported to the hospital in ambulances.

Residents say the fire department evacuated everyone, but it is unclear at this time if they have been allowed back inside.

Shakima Sims lives in the apartment complex. She says one of the victims was her friend, and she feels terrible for the family. She adds that all the apartments have carbon monoxide detectors, and they are tested regularly. Sims says this situation is concerning.

“Why didn't it go off? You know? What happened?” Sims asks.

Investigators have not given any information as to a cause, but they say there is no threat to the community.

The names of the victims have not been released.
