Lane closures on Route 495 cause commuter frustration

Commuter: ‘Traffic is already so bad; this is going to make it 10 times worse’

NORTH BERGEN – One lane has been closed in each direction on Route 495 for repair work on Friday, causing traffic and frustration. The traffic changes are expected to last two and a half years. The bridge where delays are taking place on Route 495 has been deemed structurally deficient, which is why repairs are being made.

"Traffic is already so bad. As it is, we are so overcrowded. This is going to make it 10 times worse," Guttenberg resident Linda Robinson said. "The longest two years ever.”

In order to avoid traffic, the state Department of Transportation (DOT) is sending people onto Paterson Plank Road in order to pick up the New Jersey Turnpike, routes 1 and 9, or Route 3.

However, Glenn Grujic said the local roads won't make up for the shortfall.

"Paterson Plank is already a nightmare even before the closure," Grujic said. "If I was to go local, it would probably take me even longer now because everyone is going to want to go local."

Workers with the state DOT said camera traffic is being diverted into a lane that used to be the shoulder on Route 495, so repairs can be made in the center of this bridge.
