‘School has just been scary’: 9th-grader plans walkout for school-shooting victims

Casey Bedwell-Coll wants politicians to be proactive to keep students safe

GLEN ROCK — Ninth-grader Casey Bedwell-Coll is organizing a walkout for Glen Rock High School on Wednesday in order to honor victims of school shootings and to protest gun violence. She says the teachers and board of education have been supportive, but some parents and some students have said the walkout is too political.

President Donald Trump has said that he wanted an emphasis on mental health as well when it comes to gun reform. In a February tweet, he said that he also supported raising the age from 18 to 21 to purchase guns and wanted to end the sale of bump stocks. However, on Monday morning, he tweeted that the states should make a decision on their gun laws.

Coll, on the other hand, says that politicians need to do whatever it takes in order to keep children safe.
