Thousands are without power in Sparta a day after storms pummel the area

Winds knock down power lines and trees on to roadways throughout community

SPARTA — Thousands of residents remain without power after Tuesday’s storms brought powerful winds into Sussex County.

Remnants of a tree that came down on Morning Star Drive are all that remain from the middle of Tuesday's storm after DPW crews responded to the scene. The street is now passable; however, this isn't the case everywhere in town.

Police have Woodport Road blocked off from traffic due to a fallen utility pole. And parts of East Mountain Road are also closed because of a fallen tree. Over on Saginaw Drive, a tree brought down a pole and wires.

Neighbors say they are still without power and haven't seen any utility crews. They say the power outages are a big inconvenience.

JCP&L reports that about 5,000 customers are still without power in Sparta. County-wide, that number is around 17,000. The utility does not yet have an estimated time for when they expect power to be restored in the area.
