Murphy signs executive order to change how trade workers are treated in NJ

Union officials say employers in the state have been committing tax fraud by misclassifying their employees

EDISON — For years, union officials in New Jersey say employers have been committing 1099 tax fraud by misclassifying their employees as independent contractors, enabling them to have less workers on their payroll and take in money without reporting it.

On Thursday, Governor Phil Murphy signed an executive order that will create a task force to combat the misclassification of workers in the trade industry. Murphy says that the task force will establish a set of best practices as well as examine existing instances of misclassification across all labor agencies.
