Processed foods, plastic packaging may be harmful to children

American Academy of Pediatrics calls for more reforms to food additive regulatory process

HAWTHORNE, N.Y. — The American Academy of Pediatrics' latest medical report suggests that certain processed foods and plastic packaging may have a negative effect on children, including brain development, hormone functions, and obesity. The organization also warns pregnant women to be mindful of their food intake. However, it's not just food that parents have to worry about, but chemicals in certain plastics and cans of processed goods can leak into foods that are eaten.

To reduce the chances of children being affected, the American Academy of Pediatrics recommends parents to buy more fresh or frozen produce instead of processed foods, avoid microwaving in plastic containers, and to use plastic alternatives whenever possible.
