New grant looks to begin urban renewal process in Newark

Over $800K will be invested in the neighborhood of Fairmount Heights

NEWARK — Fairmount Heights is one of the city's lowest-income neighborhoods, but a grant from the Wells Fargo Regional Foundation to the Urban League of Essex County is looking to make a change in the community. The grant — for $825,000 — will help the Urban League with their work to make people in the community financially and socially independent.

"When grants like this come along, we can do and build different things and build the association," said Dorian Johnson, president of the Fairmount Heights Neighborhood Association.

The money will be split over five years and will go towards more projects and efforts to revitalize the area.
