PD: Driver in car crash that killed Jersey City woman turns herself in

Officials say the victim was found in the backseat of the vehicle

JERSEY CITY — Friends and family are mourning the loss of the 24-year-old woman who was killed in a one-car crash in Jersey City Saturday.

Thea Harrison described her friend of over thirteen years, Khalla Nguyen, as “powerful” while standing next to a memorial for the young woman outside of Jersey City's Van Wagenen Apartments, where Nguyen lived for her entire life. A memorial near the intersection of Newark Avenue and 7th Street was set up next to the crash site.

An initial investigation showed that early Saturday morning, the car Nguyen was a passenger in somehow made contact with a guardrail before coming to a stop in the middle of the street. Footage from the scene shows the badly damaged car just sitting in the middle of this busy intersection. Investigators say Nguyen was found in the backseat and pronounced dead around 3:30 am. The driver was nowhere to be found.

Police on Sunday said the driver, 27-year-old Khadija Hamilton, surrendered to detectives around noon Sunday morning. Her attorney was with her at the time. She's now being charged with leaving the scene of an accident resulting in death, death by auto, and driving unlicensed and causing death.
