Dozens of volunteers have gathered in Perth Amboy to help collect and sort donations at the city's senior center to be sent to the victims fo Hurricane Maria in Puerto Rico.

"We're asking for water and canned foods and diapers," said Perth Amboy Mayor Wilda Diaz. "We're going to be here for today, tomorrow and Thursday and then we're going to have a big sendoff at the fire house."

For Mayor Diaz, the events in Puerto Rico are personal.

"My heart goes out to all those family members that still have not been able to get in contact with their family," Diaz said.

"There's a lot of people without food still and water, it's taking a long time getting to them," said Natasha Morales, a volunteer. "A lot of towns are still flooded. I saw that our community was putting this together and I decided to volunteer for the next few days

Perth Amboy will be accepting donations through Thursday, 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. at the Alexander F. Jankowski Center on 1 Olive Street.
