Removal of newspaper boxes in Jersey City sparks controversy

Mayor Steve Fulop says the boxes are non-functional clutter, but local papers call the move an attack on the free press

JERSEY CITY - Mayor Steve Fulop has announced that the city will be removing newspaper boxes from sidewalks across the city, but the move has drawn some sharp criticism from newspapers and publishers from the region.

In a tweet, Fulop said the boxes were non-functional, cluttered the sidewalks and had become de facto trash cans. But opponents of the move have called it an attack on the free press.
