Totowa holds hearing on asphalt plant proposal

Nearby businesses oppose a proposal to build a new asphalt plant on West End Road

Attorneys in Totowa were engaged in an argument over asphalt on Wednesday night, as the town zoning board heard plans from Applicant South Port, LLC. to build a new asphalt plant on West End Road.

"We're trying to oppose this disastrous project hte city is planning for Totowa," said Peter Longo, the Chairman of Precision Custom Coatings, located near where the plant would go.

Longo claims that the plant would cause traffic congestion, be a safety hazard, and simply be messy.

"I've been behind trucks on highways and the smell will kill you," Longo said. "I don't understand how the town will allow this."

The asphalt plant wants the property because it is close to major highways.
