A Scotch Plains school celebrated its home-grown Olympian on Thursday.

The 2016 Olympics have been over for quite some time, but Union Catholic High School still feels like an Olympic village as the school had a special homecoming for Olympian Sydney McLaughlin.

The track and field star says her next hurdle is not against competition but in the classroom as her senior year at Union Catholic is already off to a great start.

The Olympian and rising senior started off day her with a special recognition ceremony that featured festivities, gifts from the school and city representatives, plus, a banner next to the gym scoreboard.

Although McLaughlin failed to medal in the 400 meter hurdles in Rio de Janeiro, the Dunellen native became the youngest track and field Olympian in 40 years.
