Over 4,000 volunteers from Verizon wireless and landline call centers nationwide took calls during the "Hand in Hand: A Benefit for Hurricane Relief" telethon on Tuesday evening.

Verizon volunteers say that the best way that the cellular company could lend a hand and help those in need was to get involved, one phone call at a time.

"It doesn't matter what religion you are, what race, where you came here, we are there to help," said Jose Lopez, an account specialist.

"My heart goes out to all those affected and even though we are here, safe, we want them to know we care and show our support that they're not alone," said customer service representative Janak Solanki.

Along with donor calls, Verizon donated 42.5M to the event.

You can donate tot he Hand in Hand Hurricane Relief Fund by texting "GIVE" to 80077 on your mobile phone. 100% of the proceeds will go to families and communities in need, and charities to assist them, including the United Way, Save the Children and Habitat for Humanity.
