Voters ready to cast their ballots in 11th district primary election

The seat, previously held by Rep. Rodney Frelinghuysen, is being targeted by Democrats


MORRISTOWN — For over 20 years, Rep. Rodney Frelinghuysen has held the 11th congressional district's seat in congress.

However, in January, Frelinghuysen announced that he was retiring and would not be seeking re-election, and the seat is one of many across the nation Democrats are targeting in their efforts to flip control of the House of Representatives in November.

Four Democrats are currently vying to represent the party by winning Tuesday's primary: Mikie Sherrill, a former Navy helicopter pilot and former federal prosecutor, Mark Washburne, a history and political science professor, Tamara Harris, a family advocate and philanthropist, and Alison Heslin, a research scientist.

On the other side of the aisle, three Republicans will by vying to try and keep the seat in GOP hands: Jay Webber, who is already serving on the state assembly int eh 26th legislative district, Tony Ghee, and Peter De Neufville, a reserve officer in the U.S. Navy for 10 years and a active-duty member of Operation Iraqi Freedom.

In the 2016 presidential election, the district, which usually trends Republican, was won by a single percentage point by President Donald Trump.
