JERSEY CITY — Members of the community gathered to pay their respects to Lt. Christopher Robateau at the McLaughlin Funeral Home on Tuesday.

Robateau was on his way to work last week when he was in a minor car accident on the New Jersey Turnpike. When he went to check on the other driver, Robateau was struck by another car and killed.

"It's a somber and sad day," Mayor Steven Fulop said. "He was a good officer, really well respected, one of the best. He'll be missed in the department."

Robateau leaves behind a wife and three children.

A second wake will be held at the McLaughlin Funeral Home on Wednesday, from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Lt. Robateau's funeral is scheduled for Thursday morning.
