NEWARK — Essex County prosecutors and Newark police are investigating a homicide after a person was found dead by police on Monday night.

Shell casings and evidence markers were seen on Martin Luther King Blvd near Spruce St.

Multiple sources say the victim was a male, but the prosecutor's office said they were waiting to notify family before releasing more information.

Monday night's shooting occurred hours after another man was shot and killed in Newark a little over a mile away on East Peddie St. and Frelinghuysen Ave.

"A lot of shootings up here; a lot of people got shot and killed around here. A lot of people," resident James Smith said.

The Essex County Prosecutor's Office says the victim was a resident of a nearby halfway house.

Police and prosecutors have not released any suspect details in either homicide.
